Over the past two decades, a growing consensus on the need for official aid from the developed nations to take account of the fundamental socio-economic rights, and the democratisa-tion process of African nations has emerged as a leitmotiv for development and cooperation.This article exam-mines the necessity of democracy for development in Africa and discusses the challenges faced by African nations in structural transformation toward institutionalising Western models of democracy.It reviews the ongoing debate on multi-party democracy and neo-liberalism as they are applicable in Africa’s institutional reconstruction and development. The article also analyses the current role of the civil society in the continent’s drive towards development.
